Bed & Breakfast
... surrounded by vineyards ...
We named our bed and breakfast Sorriso dei Maestri. Smile of the masters. A reference to the old masters from the Renaissance period. The country house is located in Piana del Salto, a hamlet in the middle of the vineyards of Calosso (1300 inhabitants).
The house was built 60 years ago and has always retained its rural atmosphere. It is surrounded by a south-facing garden, including a beautiful swimming pool. Both the garden and the pool overlook the vineyards.
The rooms:
The three completely renovated rooms are named after our favorite Maestri: Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael Santi and Sandro Botticelli. All rooms have a luxurious private bathroom with walk-in shower. In addition, each room has a balcony, terrace or both.
Facilities:
Large swimming pool, including sunbeds, parasols and shower facilities.
Private vineyard
Fresh breakfast daily
Local snack platter daily
Communal fridge with a range of soft drinks, beers and wines (small extra charge)
On-site parking. EV charging point 450m from the house.
The name Piemonte literally means "at the foot of the mountains", which makes sense since the region is surrounded on three sides by the majestic Alps. Between the mountains, the rolling, sometimes hilly, but always magical landscape will enchant you as soon as you leave the highway at Asti. The beautiful region of Piemonte offers hilltop villages, beautiful churches and impressive castles and fortresses interspersed with vineyards and fields full of hazelnuts. The picturesque Langhe-Roero and Monferrato are even UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The region of Piemonte is home to a wide variety of grapes and DOCG wines. Let's take a look at our favorites!
Wine culture:
In the immediate vicinity of Calosso, mainly Barbera and Moscato di Asti are grown. Each village is home to several winegrowers and cantinas, and each Barbera and Barbera Superiore has its own flavor. In addition to the traditional wines, there is a new generation of, mainly young, winemakers who focus on cultivating new grape crosses. A good example is the Gamba di Pernice, which is grown on our land.
Towards Alba we find the famous and fantastic Barolo and Barbaresco wines. But let's not forget the popular white wine from Piedmont: Roero Arneis.
In short, a wine tasting (or several) is an absolute must-do in Piedmont! On our Food & Wine page (link) you can read more about the possibilities at local cantinas. Do not hesitate to contact us for support in arranging your tastings!
Food
In addition to the beautiful wines, Piedmont is also known for its own unique cuisine. Thanks to its location, local dishes can be influenced by Italian, French and even Swiss cuisine. Well-known dishes are Agnolotti (stuffed pasta pillows), Vitello Tonnato and Bagna càuda, a fondue dish. At the many local markets you will find an abundance of cheese and sausage (salumi). And don't forget to visit one of the wine or truffle festivals if you are in the area.
Culture
Since the very first inhabitants (the Ligurians) settled in the region, Piedmont has been and continues to be of great importance for the Italy we know today. One of the most famous former rulers of the region, the House of Savoy (Casa di Savoia), played an important role in the creation of today's Italy. Thanks to this history, today we can visit and enjoy the most beautiful cities, palaces and much more.
You can organize a day trip to the capital Turin (90 km), or cross the regional border to visit one of the other major cities in the area: Genoa (120 km) or Milan (150 km). But also visit the smaller, but equally rich and beautiful other famous cities such as Alba, Asti, Nizza Monferrato, Canelli, Agliano Terme or Aqui Terme. All these cities are within a radius of 5 to 40 km from our bed and breakfast.
Close to home
Within walking distance, in Piana del Salto, you will find a small supermarket, restaurant/pizzeria, enoteca (selling local wines) and church. In Calosso, 2.5 km from the house, you will find two restaurants, a cafferaria, a post office, pharmacy and ATM.
