Surroundings

The Tarn-et-Garonne, (also called the Tuscany of France) is located at a point where different regions and landscapes meet. This ensures a diversity in nature.

The center of the region is crossed by the rivers Tarn and Garonne. The stretch is known for its cuisine and has a mild climate with lots of sun (about 2000 hours per year).

The Tarn-et-Garonne produces 80% of all the fruit of the Midi-Pyrenees. The grapes of Moissac, the Chasselas table grapes have the predicate “appelation d’orgine controlée (AOC). The golden bunches of grapes are also called the pearls of the Tarn-et-Garonne. Surrounded by water and greenery, amidst hills with fruit trees and the promising vineyards, lies Moissac.

The pleasant town of Moissac is located on the G.R.65 hiking trail (St.-Jacques de Compostela), which is the most famous and most used hiking trail in Europe. The abbey and monastery of Moissac are listed as the most special stop for pilgrims from Europe and are definitely worth a visit. Throughout the year, there is an atmospheric market every Saturday and Sunday in the middle of the center on the market square. During the summer, concert evenings and the festival de la Voix (June) provide a lot of fun in the town.

Moissac is less than a 10-minute drive from our campsite.

The gently rolling landscape of the Tarn-et-Garonne offers excellent opportunities for cycling and hiking. If you prefer cycling, walking, jogging, etc. without hills, you can do so very well in Moissac along the Canal du Midi (here you can also rent bikes at the canoe rental company). The Canal du Midi is a connection between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. A beautiful car-free cycle/hiking path runs along the entire canal. In Moissac, the Canal du Midi crosses the Tarn River by means of a particularly beautiful aqueduct.

A short distance from the campsite is the confluence of the Tarn and Garonne rivers, a large recreation and water sports area Saint-Nicolas-de-la-Grave, where you can sail, surf, canoe, rent a boat or fish. Trips with a boat trip or canoe on the Garonne, the Tarn or the Canal du Midi are also possible. There are several swimming lakes with beaches and boat rental about a 30-minute drive away. The landscape of the Tarn-et-Garonne is characterised by the many dovecotes, called pigeonniers, that you will notice on the top of the hills or next to farms. They are surrounded by many villages and towns with a rich history and pleasant (evening) markets.

Nice to visit are Montauban with its historic (car-free) centre, Toulouse (also called the Paris of the south), Albi, Gaillac, Lauzerte, Montjoi, Lafrancaise, Castelsarrasin, Auvillar, Valence d’Agen etc.

In the summer there are many activities such as village festivals, brocantes and vide greniers (flea markets).

For the children there is a beautiful open-air kart track, an adventure climbing park between the treetops, a space park and Parc Walibi. Visiting museums, churches, castles and caves is also possible.
